12 V and 230 V electrical installation

Stage 2 · Prepare the van · Undersized electrics kill fridges and can be unsafe. Belcampers installs panels, wiring, and protection in the workshop.

12 min read·Pending professional technical review

In short

A camper electrical system balances service battery, chargers, loads in watts (W = V × A), and capacity in amp-hours (Ah). We size and install in Sant Julià de Ramis with clear schematics.

  1. Battery and autonomy
  2. Panel, fuses, and cable size
  3. Inverter and 230 V
  4. Workshop installation

Before you start

  • List loads: fridge, heating, inverter, chargers.
  • Keep service 12 V separate from 230 V where appropriate.
  • Reserve cable routes before panelling.
  • Do not confuse Ah (capacity) with A (instant current).

Battery and autonomy

We size service battery in Ah from daily loads and days without sun. A 100 Ah battery does not mean 100 A continuous current—Ah is usable energy capacity within maker limits. LiFePO4 vs AGM changes weight, charging, and cost. Alexis calculates with real margin, not an Amazon headline. Alternator, solar, and external 230 V integrate with compatible chargers without duplicate stages.

Panel, fuses, and cable size

DC panel with per-circuit fuses or breakers, monitoring shunt, and defined common return. Cable gauge by amps and length—thin long runs drop voltage and heat up. For 230 V from inverter or hook-up we use RCD protection and segregated wiring. Technical review stays pending per project because every schematic is unique. We do not sell a '2000 W kit' without install location.

Inverter and 230 V

Power in watts: W = V × A. An 800 W appliance at 230 V draws high DC current from the battery. Pure sine for sensitive electronics. Interior sockets only where justified and protected. External battery charger is not the same as turning the whole van into an unplanned mains install. We explain what you can run simultaneously without tripping protection.

Workshop installation

Numbered cable, terminals, watertight grommets, accessible hatches. We test real loads before closing furniture. Solar and heating sit on the same load sheet. Homologación may apply if alternator take-off or high-voltage points change—we review case by case. You get a simplified diagram for future service in Girona or on the road.

Common mistakes

  • Oversized inverter with undersized battery and cable.
  • Random 12 V returns to body without plan.
  • Confusing battery Ah with alternator amps.

FAQ

LiFePO4 or AGM?

Depends on budget, weight, and charging pattern. We decide in the project.

Do I need an inverter?

Only if you use 230 V often. Many builds live well on efficient 12 V.
